A refrigerator constantly produces condensation inside its freezer compartment. The liquid that forms drips down a drain pipe into a pan underneath the appliance where it eventually evaporates. A plugged drain pipe throws a kink in this process, causing water to back up and pool on the inside bottom of the fridge. Before calling a repair technician, attempt to clear the clog yourself. With a simple cleaning and flushing of the drain with hot water, your appliance will be back to working order in a short period of time.

Pull the refrigerator away from the wall, and unplug it from the wall socket. Turn off the electricity to the outlet via a circuit breaker instead of unplugging the fridge, if you prefer.

How to Fix a Plugged Drain on a Side-by-Side Refrigerator

Open the refrigerator door. Locate the drain hole, which typically can be found at the bottom. Refer to the owner's manual if you have difficulty finding the hole for your particular appliance. Insert one end of the plumbing snake into the drain hole as far as it will go.

Push the snake up and down gently to loosen any clog. Remove the snake. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of baking soda down the drain. Pour 2 cups of hot water down the drain slowly.

Use a basting syringe if the cup lacks a spout in which to direct the water's flow. Locate the drain pan under your refrigerator in which the drain tube empties. Remove the refrigerator's front grill plate. Refer to your owner's manual if you have trouble locating the pan. Place a towel at the base of the fridge to catch any spills. Empty the accumulated baking soda-water solution. Clean the pan of any other residue, and return it to its original position.

Replace the front grill plate and plug in the refrigerator. Push the appliance back into its spot. If you're concerned about your food remaining fresh while working on the fridge, keep certain items in a separate cooler with ice or ice packs. Certain refrigerators have their drains located along the back wall of the appliance. If you feel uncomfortable disassembling portions of your fridge, contact a repair technician, especially if you're instructed to do so in the manual.

Be sure to unplug the refrigerator or shut off electricity via a circuit breaker to the fridge's outlet before clearing the drain. This will help prevent accidental shocks. When sliding your refrigerator back into place, try to position it so that it is tipped slightly up and back against the wall.

This will help prevent clogs and obstructions by helping to ensure that the water in the defrost drip pan moves smoothly down into the freezer drain hole.

Water under the fruit and vegetable bins of your refrigerator, ice in the bottom of the freezer or puddles of water under your refrigerator can indicate a clogged defrost drain tube. In a self-defrosting refrigerator, this tube carries water produced during a defrost cycle out of the refrigerator to a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator where it evaporates. When the tube becomes clogged, it can lead to leaks. Homeowners armed with the make and model of their refrigerator and a few simple pieces of equipment can usually repair a clogged defrost drain tube without professional help.

Disconnect your refrigerator from the power outlet and slide it a few feet out from the wall so that you can access the back if necessary. Remove frozen goods from the freezer and place them in a cooler. Use your owner's manual to determine the location of the defrost drain tube in your refrigerator. Depending upon the brand and model of refrigerator you own, this tube might be located under the fruit and vegetable bins, at the back of the unit or along the floor of the freezer compartment.

Show Comments. The drip pan on your refrigerator is a receptacle that catches condensation flowing from the defrost drain in your freezer to the outside of the refrigerator where it can evaporate.

Occasionally you may need to get to the drip pan to clean it, remove a blockage in the drain line or perhaps to repair it. Finding the drip pan is simple and takes only a moment if you know where to look.

While refrigerators vary in design, the drip pan is almost universally located in the bottom of the unit. This is so that gravity will allow the liquid to flow easily from the top of the unit to the bottom. Remove the kick panel on the lower front of your refrigerator if your model has one. Most kick panels remove easily by hand.

Simply tilt and pull the panel out until it releases. In many refrigerators, you can access the drip pan from this area. In other models you may need to slide the refrigerator out from the wall and get to the pan from the bottom, rear of the unit.

Follow the defrost drain line to the pan, since it always empties into the pan. If you have difficulty spotting the location of the pan from the bottom front or rear of the unit, look for the place where the drain line empties beneath the unit and it should dump into the pan.

In some models the drain line runs along the back of the refrigerator. Other models may conceal the line inside the appliance. Shine a flashlight or other light source to help you see under the refrigerator and find the wide flat metal or plastic pan. It generally rests on top of a set of brackets that hold it in place, allowing it to be slid out or otherwise removed. Pull the pan out carefully, as it may be full of water, and dump it out or clean it as necessary.
